Homatropine is a synthetic analog of the natural alkaloid atropine. Despite belonging to the same class of anticholinergic drugs, homatropine is less potent than atropine, and has been used to treat stomach ulcers and intestinal problems, and may also be used to prevent nausea, vomiting and motion sickness. Homatropine methylbromide belongs to the group of medicines called antimuscarinics. It is used to treat duodenal or stomach ulcers or intestinal problems and can be used in combination with antacids or other medicines in the treatment of peptic ulcer. It may also be used to prevent nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness.1 A sub-therapeutic amount of homatropine methylbromide is used within opioid formulations to discourage a deliberate overdose.2
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Homatropine methylbromide, like atropine, is a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. Its antimuscarinic properties block parasympathetic nerve stimulation, thereby inhibiting pepsin and gastrin secretion. It may also have a slight relaxant action on the bile ducts and gallbladder, resulting in an antispasmodic effect. Homatropine methylbromide may be used in combination with antacids or histamine H2-receptor antagonists in the treatment of peptic ulcers, gastric and duodenal ulcers.
